Friday evening we went to the airport and picked up our good friend Matt Welling who came to visit us in Texas. Since he had never been to Texas before we thought it would be good to show him around the JFK Museum in Dallas (we had actually never been there before either so it worked all around). Being a history buff it was so awesome to get to see the story unfold in the place it happened. I got shivers as we entered the former "Texas School Book Depository" where Lee Harvey Oswald was positioned. We went up an elevator to the sixth floor (the floor he was on when he shot the President) and they took you through a tour of JFK's campaign for President and his life in his first years as President. When we came to the window where Lee Harvey Oswald actually pulled the trigger, they had it all set up as Lee Harvey Oswald had left it. He had boxes stacked to steady his rifle and even left a brown paper bag with remains of his lunch in it. During the chaos after he shot the President, Lee Harvey Oswald calmly left the building where a reporter asked him if he know where a telephone was. He responded and then headed away when a couple blocks down he was stopped by a policeman. The reporter had given police his description when they asked if anyone had been in the School Book Depository. When he was stopped based on the description the police were given (keep in mind that they didn't know that that building is where the President was shot, they just wanted to question the guy to see if he saw anything), he abruptly turned and killed Officer J.D. Tippit. Unfortunately for Oswald the Officer had already called in that he was stopping someone who matched the description and when the Officer didn't respond, more police were sent to that area to find out what happened. They found Officer Tippit dead and so then figured they were on the path of the killer. They searched the surrounding buildings until they found Oswald in a theater nearby. President Kennedy was shot at 12:30pm, pronounced dead at 1pm and Lee Harvey Oswald was taken to the Dallas Police Dept at 2pm arrested for the murder of Officer Tippit and suspicion of the murder of President Kennedy.
Just 2 days after he killed the President, Sunday morning, Oswald was being transferred to the Dallas county jail, he was shot and killed by Jack Ruby who claimed to be distraught over the Presidents death. The whole thing was caught on camera and replayed on the seventh floor where you could take a tour of the life of the photographer who caught the entire assassination on his camera along with the killing of Oswald (he was the only one who caught the footage of the entire assassination, others just got bits and pieces). The photographer eventually donated his camera that caught the assasination of the President, but as everyone knows how our government works, it is in storage!
I loved the museum and getting to see some recent history exactly where it happened. It was definitely worth the time and money to see and I highly recommend everyone going to see it.
At the Museum ready to go in!

The window Oswald shot from. It's the corner window that you can see the two strips from the lights.

Dealey Plaza

One of the conspiracy theory's claims that there was another shooter because there were 4 gunshots heard and Oswald only fired three. They quickly put that one to rest. There were only 3 shots fired, but the first one missed and hit the curb which sounded like another shot was fired when it was only the bullet hitting the cement. The white spot is where that first bullet hit.

The x in the street is where the President was hit the first time.

Us standing on that x! We had to hurry because there were cars coming. The road is still used and open for anyone to drive on.

The place where the President was shot the second time.

Us at the second x. We timed this shot a little better with the traffic lights.

Our friend Matt showing us the Grassy Knoll where there was thought to have been a second shooter. All conspiracy theory's have been proved wrong. It was just one nut acting alone.

His left hand is pointing to the building Oswald shot out of, his right to where Oswald was killed, and he is standing by the place Kennedy was shot a second time leading to his death.

After the JFK Museum we went across the street to the Holocaust Museum. There are quite a few people who survived the Holocaust and moved to Texas. The museum there is actually run by volunteers who are still alive after being in concentration camps. There were accounts of these people all over that museum and I liked that it brought it to a close reality. There was one volunteer in the end room where a memorial was set up with ashes of those killed in pillars and names of those survivors families on plaques. This sweet old man showed us where his sister's plaque was. I can't imagine living through something so awful.

Not wanting to end the day on a depressing note, we stopped at a novelty Texas store where Matt bought a hat and looks pretty good I might say! He better be careful or we will convert him to being a Texan in no time.

On our way out we got to drive on the now famous road where JFK was shot.

The end of a long hot day!
